Q&A with Terry Fator

Category Show and Tell

|by Maureen Mariano |

“America’s Got Talent” champion turned Las Vegas headliner Terry Fator continues to capture the hearts of millions with his infectious blend of off-the-wall humor, dazzling music, unmatched celebrity impressions, and of course, his ragtag cast of lovable characters. In a recent chat with ShowTickets, Terry Fator talks about his award-winning residency show at The Mirage and how he has undeniably become The Voice of Entertainment.

Q&A with Terry Fator - Las Vegas

ShowTickets: Singer, comedian and celebrity impressionist – your list of talents is endless. What led you to the entertainment world?

Terry Fator: When I was around 10, I had to do an assignment in school, and I did a report on the great Paul Winchell and read his book on the art of ventriloquism. From that moment, I was hooked! And my dream was not just to be a ventriloquist; my dream was to be on the Las Vegas stage.  I didn’t realize you couldn't pick a more difficult performance skill if you wanted to end up in Las Vegas…but somehow it worked out.

ST: After winning NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” in 2007, you’ve taken your act—packed with big laughs and incredible music numbers performed by puppets—to Las Vegas. How have you and your act evolved since then?

TF: I’m always adding in new characters, new songs and new topical jokes. When deflategate hit, we had a killer Tom Brady joke; now there is a great Donald Trump line. Not only that, every year or so, I rewrite the entire show. But if you want to see the original shows, they are available on DVD.

ST: From Winston the Impersonating Turtle to Maynard Tompkins, you have quite the motley crew of hilarious costars. What’s the process like to create each character?

TF:  All the comedy and impressions I do are character and situation driven. I start with the premise that, in essence, what I’m doing is hosting a talk show on stage and the characters are guests. So I always think, “Who would be an interesting guest?” Then once I come up with the look and personality, every song and joke and line is tailored to “who” that character is.

ST: And we have to ask, do you have a favorite?

TF: That’s like asking Hillary Clinton which delete button she likes the best. But if I had to pick one, it would have to be the puppet who won AGT for me—Winston the Impersonating Turtle.
