The creators of ‘Potted Potter’ cast a (funny) spell on Vegas

The world of Harry Potter has engaged millions of fans through books and movies, and characters are exalted and revered. No one would dare – gasp – make fun of it? However, it is the love of Harry that inspired the world tour of Potted Potter: The Unauthorized Harry Experience with its debut in the Windows Showroom at Bally’s Las Vegas, starring the original creators through June 23 (and new cast starting on June 24). Written and created by two-time Olivier Award-nominated BBC Television actors Daniel Clarkson and Jefferson Turner, ShowTickets.com entered their world to find out if they are a match for Gryffindor, Death Eaters and Dumbledore.

What is it about Harry Potter that you decided to create a show parodying the series of books?
Daniel Clarkson:
We have been fans ever since the books came out. It all started when we were asked to do something entertaining with the Potter series at a bookstore. We came up with the idea of dramatizing all five books (at the time) in five minutes. The show just took off, and we added the sixth and seventh books and toured. Everyone loves Harry Potter books and movies, including adults and kids, whether you are a geek or a jock.
Jefferson Turner: We are geeks, not jocks.

How did British and American audiences respond to the show – shocked, or loved the humor?
Daniel Clarkson:
We come from a place of humor, we love the books ourselves, and we treat the characters with respect. We perform jokes that engage with the fans. Of course, we have to be careful. The fans come with their magic wands, and while they can’t perform magic, wands can be stuck in a place that can still hurt!
Jefferson Turner: We show our love by making fun, poking humor, being sarcastic and adding irony. We are all here to have fun.

Have you visited Las Vegas before?
Daniel Clarkson
: I came to Las Vegas about two years ago for six days, and I can actually remember three of them. It was a lot of fun.
Jefferson Turner: It is a wild city, but I don’t know if Las Vegas is ready for us.

What is your dream for the show in Las Vegas?
Daniel Clarkson
: The dream is never to leave. Years from now, we want to talk about coming out with the show and performing in Vegas. Every artist dreams of having a residency here.

So what does your family like about you becoming a headliner on the Las Vegas Strip?
Jefferson Turner
: Our families think we are making all of this up. They can’t believe that we managed to get the show to Vegas and on the Strip. We post on social media, but our families believe the posts are fake.
Daniel Clarkson: When I sent my mother a picture of me posing in front of Bally’s Las Vegas, she asked me when was I coming home to do my laundry, since she wasn’t going to do it.

Potted Potter is the first show – and probably the only show – on the Strip featuring a live Quidditch match. The show is performed at the Windows Showroom in Bally’s Las Vegas Monday through Sunday at 8 p.m. (dark Thursdays) with matinee performances Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. You don’t need a magic wand for a discount – snag deals on tickets to see Potted Potter right here on ShowTickets.
